DHAKA: At least 24 people were killed after a passenger bus carrying around 40 individuals plunged into the Padma River while trying to board a ferry in Bangladesh, officials said on Thursday.
The incident took place on Wednesday near Daulatdia in Rajbari district, about 100 km (62 miles) from Dhaka, when the bus reportedly lost control while approaching the ferry.
According to police, the Fire Service, and Civil Defence, the vehicle overturned and sank nearly 30 feet into the river.
Rescue teams recovered 22 bodies from the submerged bus, including six men, 11 women, and five children, said Fire Service official Talha Bin Zasim.
The total death toll has reached 24, including two women who later died after being rescued, he added.
Four fire service teams, along with 10 divers, spearheaded the search and rescue operation, with assistance from the army, police, coast guard, and local authorities.
Officials believe more passengers could still be unaccounted for. Road and ferry accidents claim hundreds of lives each year in Bangladesh.
