Police in San Francisco have arrested a 20-year-old man after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, setting a perimeter gate on fire.
Officers responded to a call in the city’s North Beach neighbourhood early Friday morning.
While the San Francisco Police Department did not officially identify the suspect or the residence, an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that the incident took place at Altman’s home.
The spokesperson also said the same individual had made threats against the company’s San Francisco headquarters.
“Thankfully, no one was injured,” the spokesperson said. “We appreciate the swift response from police and the city’s support in ensuring the safety of our staff.”
Although the suspect had fled the scene before officers arrived, he later appeared outside an OpenAI office about an hour later and allegedly threatened to burn down the building, police said. He was subsequently taken into custody.
Authorities declined to confirm whether the suspect remained in custody or if charges had been filed, noting that the investigation is ongoing.
Altman, a billionaire, owns multiple properties, but his primary residence is in San Francisco, where OpenAI is headquartered.
