A peculiar image shared by a NASA astronaut sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many initially mistaking it for an “alien egg” — though the truth turned out to be far less mysterious.
According to reports, an astronaut aboard the International Space Station posted a photo showing a purple, egg-shaped object that appeared to have a creature emerging from it.
The astronaut later explained that the object was not extraterrestrial, but simply a potato. Its sprouting roots had taken on an unusual shape due to the effects of microgravity.
Sharing the image on the social media platform X, the astronaut jokingly dubbed it “Spudnik 1.” He added that the potato was secured using a Velcro hook within a temporary lighting setup to support its growth in space.
He said the idea for the experiment was inspired by the The Martian, which explores the concept of cultivating potatoes in space.
The astronaut also noted that potatoes are highly nutritious and efficient crops, making them potentially valuable for future space missions.
It is worth noting that NASA has previously conducted plant-growth experiments in space, including crops such as lettuce, kale, and zinnia flowers, to help provide astronauts with additional nutrition.
