The federal government has sharply increased the levy on high-octane petrol (HOBC), pushing its price to a record Rs534 per litre—the highest ever in Pakistan.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif via video link on Sunday. The move targets luxury fuel consumption, as high-octane petrol is mainly used in premium, high-end vehicles.
According to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the levy has been raised from Rs100 to Rs300 per litre, reflecting a steep increase of Rs200 per litre. The government said the step is aimed at placing a greater financial burden on wealthier segments of society.
Officials added that the measure is expected to generate around Rs9 billion in monthly savings, which will be redirected toward public relief efforts. The prime minister also noted that prices of regular petrol and diesel remain unchanged, ensuring that middle- and lower-income groups are not affected.
