James McAvoy quietly expanded his family — four years ago.
The X-Men star secretly welcomed his first child with Lisa Liberati in 2022, but kept the news private until now. In a recent interview with The Guardian, published March 31, the 46-year-old actor opened up about becoming a father again at 42.
This marks his second child, as McAvoy is already father to 15-year-old Brendan, whom he shares with ex-wife Anne-Marie Duff.
Reflecting on fatherhood, McAvoy said becoming a parent in his forties has given him a different outlook. “Having a kid at 42 is definitely easier in some ways — I worry less,” he shared, adding that he feels more philosophical now.
At the same time, he admitted it comes with challenges. “It’s also harder, because you’re older and more tired,” he said.
The The Chronicles of Narnia actor noted that balancing work and parenting isn’t always easy. He revealed he would often wake up in the middle of the night with thoughts about work while filming.
He also pointed out that the early hustle of building a career is usually easier in younger years. “That’s when you work your socks off, burn the midnight oil, and go the extra mile — usually in your 20s,” he said.
McAvoy and Liberati, who divide their time between London and Philadelphia, first met on the set of Split. After keeping their relationship largely private, the couple confirmed they married in 2022.
