Meta plans to remove end-to-end encryption from Instagram DMs by May

Meta has announced that “end-to-end encryption” will be removed from Instagram direct messages by May 8, 2026.
The company explained that the feature is being discontinued due to low user adoption.
Meta has confirmed that the privacy feature, originally launched in 2021 as part of its push for a more private social media experience, will be discontinued.
In a statement, the company said: “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we are removing this option from Instagram.”
Users who want more secure conversations are encouraged to use WhatsApp, which provides end-to-end encryption by default. On Instagram, the feature had to be manually enabled, and Meta has not announced any replacement for encrypted messaging.
Those currently using encrypted messages will soon receive guidance on how to download their media and messages before the feature is removed.
Last week, TikTok also chose not to roll out encrypted messaging, citing concerns that encryption can limit law enforcement and safety teams’ ability to review messages when necessary.
Experts have voiced concern over Meta’s decision, warning that it reduces options for users seeking secure communication.
