Kirsten Dunst had previously shown interest in starring in Minecraft 2.

Kirsten Dunst has officially landed a role in the Minecraft movie sequel, and she’s clearly thrilled about it.
The 43-year-old actress shared the news on Instagram on March 19, revealing that she has been cast as Alex in the yet-untitled follow-up, captioning her post simply: “My dream came true.”
The role was hinted at in the post-credits scene of A Minecraft Movie, with Alex previously voiced by Kate McKinnon in the original film.
Kirsten Dunst had been openly campaigning for the role since August, telling Town & Country that she had two strong reasons for wanting to be part of the project.
She shared that her children loved the first film, and she was also hoping for a box office success. “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” she remarked at the time with refreshing honesty.
She wasn’t wrong. Her latest film, Roofman, was produced on a tight budget, with a significant portion spent on creating a fully stocked replica store set.
Still, Kirsten Dunst pointed out one unexpected benefit—her kids are still wearing pyjamas she “borrowed” from the set.
A Minecraft Movie, which premiered in April 2025, turned into a massive success, earning nearly $1 billion at the box office.
The sequel is set to reunite the original cast alongside Dunst, with Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Danielle Brooks all expected to return.
For an actress who has largely been part of critically praised yet modest-grossing films, the Minecraft franchise marks an exciting new chapter.
Judging by her Instagram post, she couldn’t be more delighted about it.
