Bruno Fernandes reached 100 assists across all competitions after providing two setups in Manchester United’s crucial 3–1 victory over Aston Villa. ⚽

Manchester United strengthened their push for a place in the UEFA Champions League with an important 3–1 victory over top-four rivals Aston Villa.
Michael Carrick’s side went ahead when Casemiro scored early in the second half at Old Trafford on Sunday, but Ross Barkley soon equalised for Villa.
Manchester United finished the match strongly as Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko scored late goals to secure Michael Carrick’s seventh victory in nine games since taking charge as interim manager.
Currently third in the Premier League, United sit three points ahead of fourth-placed Aston Villa in the battle for a UEFA Champions League spot through a top-four finish.
United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe recently praised Carrick’s “excellent” work but stopped short of confirming the former Old Trafford favourite as the club’s long-term manager.
Still, Carrick is strengthening his case for the permanent role after steadying the team following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United secured their latest victory following an 11-day break after Michael Carrick’s first defeat in charge at Newcastle United. Carrick celebrated with a joyful jig on the touchline after Benjamin Sesko sealed the win.
Meanwhile, struggling Aston Villa have lost their last three league matches and managed just one win in seven top-flight games, leaving them three points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea with eight games remaining in the fight for European qualification.
After a slow first half, Manchester United finally broke through Aston Villa’s defence in the 53rd minute.
Bryan Mbeumo’s fierce shot was pushed away by Emiliano Martinez, resulting in a corner that led to the opening goal.
Bruno Fernandes curled a corner toward the near post, where Casemiro timed his run perfectly to flick a header past Emiliano Martinez.
With Casemiro expected to depart when his contract ends this season, Manchester United supporters treated the Brazilian midfielder to chants of “one more year.”
United lost their grip on the game and conceded in the 64th minute. In his first Premier League start in 14 months, Ross Barkley unleashed a stunning strike from 12 yards past Senne Lammens after United failed to clear a dangerous ball.
However, Matheus Cunha restored the lead in the 71st minute. Charging onto a brilliant pass from Bruno Fernandes into the Villa box, Cunha calmly slotted the ball into the far corner.
The assist was Fernandes’s 16th in the Premier League this season, surpassing David Beckham’s previous club record of 15 set in the 1999–2000 campaign.
Bruno Fernandes has now registered 100 assists for Manchester United in all competitions since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2020.
Benjamin Sesko came off the bench to make a statement after being left out, netting a deflected strike in the 81st minute.
Fernandes expressed his delight at providing two assists to help his teammates and surpass David Beckham’s club record.
“I’m more proud and pleased because I did it serving my teammates. Giving joy to others is also very good,” he said.
“When you play in the position I play, I’m very happy I can help them to score and be happy in that moment. It’s a huge achievement for me, but the main achievement would be finishing at the top spot at the end of the season.”
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest moved out of the relegation zone following a 0-0 draw with Fulham at the City Ground.
Still searching for their first win under Vitor Pereira, fourth-bottom Forest — who have had four managers this season — sit just above third-bottom West Ham United on goal difference.
Ten-man Leeds United held on for a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace despite a missed penalty by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and a red card shown to Gabriel Gudmundsson.
Later on Sunday, struggling Tottenham Hotspur travel to Liverpool, with only goal difference keeping them out of the relegation zone.
