French football star Kylian Mbappé’s knee injury was reportedly misdiagnosed after Real Madrid’s medical team conducted an MRI scan on the wrong leg.
According to a report by The Athletic, the staff examined the incorrect leg during the scan, and no problem was detected as a result.
The 27-year-old went on to feature in three matches before the issue was finally identified and treated.
Mbappé sustained the knee injury after receiving a blow during a La Liga clash against Celta Vigo on December 7, 2025. Sources cited by the outlet said that, initially, his right leg was scanned instead of the left, allowing him to continue playing despite signs of inflammation in the left knee.
He completed all three matches, playing the full 90 minutes in each, and later matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year.
Once the error was discovered, a proper MRI scan of his left leg revealed a partial tear in a posterior knee ligament. On December 31, 2025, the club reported that he had suffered a knee sprain and would follow a conservative recovery plan.
Mbappé was not sidelined and has since appeared in 10 matches, scoring nine goals. Real Madrid and Mbappé have not yet responded to The Athletic’s report.
