Prince William Takes Key Steps to Safeguard His Children with Princess Kate

The future king, Prince William, has made a crucial decision to protect his and Princess Kate’s children—Princess Charlotte, Prince George, and Prince Louis—from potential future fallout.
The Prince of Wales has pledged to protect his children from the divisions inherent in the traditional “heir and spare” system.
At 43, William is determined that Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will lead independent lives, rather than being sidelined as “spares” to their older brother, Prince George, the future King.
In a move seen as thoughtful for the monarchy’s future, the heir apparent is taking steps to ensure his younger children are empowered.
Tina Brown, Princess Diana’s biographer, noted in her Fresh Hell Substack column: “I am told that Prince William is deeply aware of the built-in cruelty of primogeniture. He is committed to ensuring that Charlotte and Louis are well-prepared and financially secure to live independent lives, breaking the cycle of limited freedom faced by second- and third-born royals.”
The concept stems from aristocratic tradition, where the eldest child inherits the title or estate, and the younger sibling exists as a backup “just in case.”
Prince Harry’s revelation
In his memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex claimed that the terms were used by his parents, Charles and Diana, as well as by the late Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh.
Harry recounted that, on the day of his birth, King Charles allegedly told Princess Diana: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare – my work is done.”
Royal author Tom Quinn, in a Channel 5 documentary, explained how this mindset has shaped the dynamics among the three Wales siblings.
