The Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, premiered on March 20.

Project Hail Mary has delivered one of the year’s most surprising highlights: an unexpected cameo from Meryl Streep. In the Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, the three-time Oscar winner voices one of the pre-programmed options for Rocky, the alien companion who becomes Gosling’s unlikely ally.
Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller shared that the idea began as lighthearted experimentation on set. “We tried a variety of silly voices ourselves,” Miller told Entertainment Weekly, adding that crew members also pitched in to create voices that would make Gosling react naturally.
The concept eventually turned into something bigger. “Wouldn’t it be amazing to get Meryl Streep?” Lord recalled, noting how long they hesitated before reaching out.
The opportunity came through producer Amy Pascal, who had previously worked with Streep on The Post. Once approached, Streep embraced the role enthusiastically. “She was incredibly playful and creative,” Miller said, explaining that she recorded multiple variations and encouraged the team to explore different directions.
While Rocky is ultimately performed by puppeteer James Ortiz, Streep’s contribution remains a delightful surprise for audiences.
Led by Gosling as Dr. Ryland Grace—a schoolteacher turned astronaut stranded in space—the film opened on March 20 to strong reviews and solid box office performance. Streep’s cameo adds an unexpected and memorable touch that fans are likely to remember long after the credits roll.
