President Asif Ali Zardari Expresses Grief, Orders Top Medical Care for Injured and Strict Safety Inspections With Investigation

At least eight women were killed and more than 80 others injured when the roof of a shop collapsed in Rahim Yar Khan, Punjab, during the distribution of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) cash, officials reported.
District Police Officer Irfan Samo said the incident occurred in Chak 123P as women had gathered to collect their government welfare payments ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. Rescue teams said the roof gave way under the crowd’s weight. According to officials, the shopkeeper allegedly directed some of the over 100 women onto the roof while others remained inside.
A case has been registered at the Airport Police Station in the name of the aid agency. Five individuals, including the private retailer’s device agent, have been named in the case. The DPO said the device agent has been held responsible for the accident.
Rescue teams and police personnel removed those trapped under the debris and transferred them to Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan. Hospital sources reported that many of the injured suffered head injuries, broken legs, and fractured arms, with several in critical condition.
The BISP provides quarterly cash payments to low-income families, primarily benefiting women. The tragedy highlights the ongoing risks of overcrowding at aid distribution points, a recurring issue during Ramadan in Pakistan. Similar incidents have occurred before; in 2023, at least 11 women and children died in a stampede at a Karachi distribution centre.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed grief and condolences to the families, directing authorities to provide the best possible care to the injured, expedite rescue operations, and ensure enforcement of building regulations, gas cylinder safety, and a full investigation to prevent future tragedies.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, instructed authorities to ensure optimal medical treatment, and requested an immediate report from the District Commissioner.
BISP Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid also voiced serious concern, noting that the beneficiary women had placed their trust in the programme for support and protection.
