WhatsApp is developing a new disappearing messages feature designed to give users greater control over their privacy. The update is expected to improve how people manage conversations, particularly when sharing sensitive or time-sensitive information. The feature is still under development.
It was recently discovered in a WhatsApp beta version for Android by WABetaInfo. The new option allows messages to be automatically deleted shortly after they are read by the recipient. This differs from the current disappearing messages setting, which removes messages after a set time from when they are sent. By tying deletion to when a message is actually opened, WhatsApp aims to create a more flexible and user-friendly privacy experience.
Currently, WhatsApp allows users to enable disappearing messages with preset time limits such as 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. While these options offer some control, they do not always align with how users want to manage specific conversations. The upcoming feature aims to overcome this limitation by introducing an “after reading” timer with more flexible settings.
Early reports suggest that users will be able to decide how long a message stays visible after it has been opened. Expected options include 5 minutes, 1 hour, and 12 hours. This gives users more precise control over message visibility once it has been read. The feature is also expected to be customizable, allowing it to be applied either to all chats or selected conversations based on user preference.
WhatsApp is also working on improving the design of the disappearing messages interface to make it more intuitive and user-friendly. The updated layout is expected to clearly display both the traditional timer and the new “after reading” option, allowing users to better understand and manage their privacy settings.
Once the feature is released, users will have two main ways to control disappearing messages. The first is the standard timer, which starts counting from the moment a message is sent. For instance, if a 24-hour duration is selected, the message will automatically disappear after 24 hours, whether or not it has been read.
The second option is the new “after reading” timer, where the countdown only starts once the recipient has opened and read the message. For example, if a sender sets a 5-minute timer and the message is read three hours later, it will disappear five minutes after being opened. This ensures messages remain accessible until they are actually viewed, but not for long afterward.
This method provides a greater level of privacy and control, allowing users to share information more confidently knowing that messages will not stay visible longer than needed. It is particularly useful for conversations involving personal or sensitive information.
Although still under development, WhatsApp is actively testing and refining the feature. It is expected to roll out first to beta users before reaching a wider audience. This update highlights WhatsApp’s continued focus on enhancing privacy and making messaging more secure and flexible.
